CULTURE: TORRIJOS

Some time ago we were on a shoot in the province of Toledo and as it is a tourist destination we visited the region while we were there.

Toledo, the capital of this province in central Spain, is of extreme beauty, but it is not the only urban nucleus that we found here which holds a valuable and important cultural heritage. A clear example is the destination and subject of this article: Torrijos.

Torrijos holds a lot of history and, in my opinion, its people are very proud of their town. You only have to see how well kept the monuments in Torrijos are.

HISTORY: SAN JUAN DE AMANDI (Saint John of Amandi)

San Juan de Amandi

To all history, art and monument enthusiasts: if you happen upon or you are thinking about visiting the municipality of Villaviciosa (Asturias), you must visit the church of San Juan de Amandi in Amandi, only 3km from Villaviciosa.

San Juan de Amandi was declared a National Monument in 1931 and it is a late-Romanesque church; it is one of the most important buildings from the Asturian Romanesque period and it stands out from other monuments in rural areas because of its shapes, volume and above all because of its large number of sculptures. It is thought to date from the first third of the 13th century, when the church of Santa María de Valdediós was founded.

VILLAGES: CAMERO VIEJO

Cañón del Leza

In the heart of Camero Viejo, found in the wine region of Rioja, there are several charming villages to visit: Soto en Cameros, San Román de Cameros and Velilla.

These three villages are in the middle of the countryside, on the banks of the River Leza, and are in keeping with their environment.

It is the perfect place to do rural tourism, where you will have the possibility of walking in the countryside, do some hillwalking, learn about the history, culture or gastronomy of the place and much more.

HISTORY: CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA DEL NARANCO.

Santa María del Naranco

Oviedo is an Asturian city which I have talked about before in this blog. It is a culturally and historically rich city, proof of which is the church of Santa María del Naranco.

Santa María del Naranco is set in the hillside of Mount Naranco, amongst beautiful scenery and amazing views of Oviedo, just like San Miguel de Lillo.

This pre-Romanesque monument was ordered to be built by king Ramiro I in 842 AD. It is believed that because Santa María del Naranco does not have an apse, but holds the king’s throne instead, it was used as a country palace or recreational royal residence.
