As I have mentioned on several occasions, Asturias is a perfect autonomous region where to do tourism. The combination of the mountainside and coast, which are within a short distance of each other, make this region an ideal destination to enjoy your holiday. A clear example is Cabrales, a municipality in east Asturias; half of its territory lies in the National Park of the Picos de Europa and it is also very close to the Cantabrian Sea.
Cabrales is perfect for rural tourism, active tourism and natural tourism. You can walk through its lush forests or hike along the desert-like limestone rock of the Picos de Europa, all in the same day. You can do very easy and pleasant routes in this municipality, for example, the famous Senda del Cares, also known as the Garganta Divina (divine gourge), which is a ravine that was formed by a glacier. You can climb the emblematic Picu Arriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes), climb up the renown Torrecerrado, or fish and simply enjoy the gurgling rivers Cares and Casaño…
But Cabrales is not just countryside and amazing natural spots… Cabrales is also history, culture, gastronomy and a perfect combination of all three.

Asturias hides an infinite number of new places for visitors, and all which are interesting for tourists to discover. For example, there is the Municipality of Cabranes, which is rich in nature, culture, arts and crafts, gastronomy…
The capital of Cabranes is Santa Eulalia (Santolaya), set in central-eastern Asturias, in the Cider Region, and shares its borders with the municipalities of: Piloña, Villaviciosa and Nava; the latter two also belong to the Cider Region.
This place has many virtues, but the most emblematic is its natural surroundings. Meadows, valleys and indigenous forests in particular, all which make up a beautiful natural environment that captivates the tourist with its spectacular views.
Cabranes is, almost in its entirety, countryside, which means you can enjoy many sign-posted routes that run through the municipality. From high points, you can see plenty of indigenous forests and mountains that make up this municipality and you can also enjoy amazing panoramic views of the Sierra del Sueve and of the Picos de Europa.

Routes: San Silvestre Cicloturista Arriondas – Covadonga – Arriondas
Dec 28, 2010 Activities, Asturias, Sports, Leisure, Routes, Traditions, Tourism, Tourism, Asturias Tourism, Natural Tourism
There are famous races in Spain called the San Silvestre races and can be found almost everywhere. These races take place every 31 December with a large number of people attending or taking part in them.
But it’s not all about running and competing. Tandem Sport has been organising the San Silvestre Arriondas – Sanctuary of Covadonga – Arriondas race every year since 1993, with the idea of seeing the new year in, in a different way: by bicycle.
This San Silvestre is different, not only because it’s a race by bicycle, but also because it isn’t a competition. It’s simply a lovely outing which anyone can join in.

It has been a while since I last wrote about a traditional custom, so here is one that has been around for quite some time and takes place now during this festive season: “The Nativity Scene of Cumbres”.
It’s a long-standing tradition that almost all mountaineering groups share and which is carried out during Christmas.
As its name suggests, the Nativity Scene of Cumbres, involves the group climbing up a mountain and placing the nativity scene in a place at the top of the mountain. The norm is that each mountaineering group has a favourite peak to take the nativity scene to, which means that you will very likely see numerous nativity scenes in dotted around different massifs.

A while ago I wrote about Regional Migration and more specifically, about a migration made by a farming family from León. We still have one stage left to reach the end of this migration: Lago de Omaña – Albelgas de Luna, the most physically demanding.
Below are links to previous articles on this route provided here as a reference.
Just a note before we begin this next adventure: there is a map and a file of the route which you can download at the end of the article. Please remember that this information is merely representative so if you decide to do this route, we strongly recommend you equip yourselves with a map and compass or GPS.
