CITIES: “OVIEDO”

Catedral de Oviedo

Oviedo, one of the cleanest cities in Spain and the capital of the municipality that shares its name and capital of the Principality of Asturias, is located in the centre of the autonomous region in the hillsides of Mount Naranco.

This city was founded in 761 and ever since Oviedo continues to resist the passage of time, being witness to many historic events.

Oviedo is a culturally-rich city, having two active and important theatres: the Filarmónica and the famous Campoamor Theatre. The latter is host to the most important cultural event of the year, the Prince of Asturias Awards.

A special mention of the historic and architectural interest of this city: the fountain of Fonacalada, the Oviedo Cathedral, San Miguel del Illo, Santa María del Naranco, San Julián de los Prados. But there aren’t just ancient monuments here but modern constructions as well, such as the Buenavista Shopping Centre, by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava.

Oviedo is not only culture, history and architecture; it is a very vibrant city which is best observed on one of its most busy streets, Calle Uría. There are many green areas, such as the San Francisco Park, which are home to many animals like birds and squirrels.

Oviedo is certainly a city of great interest for everyone to visit, as it has endless tourist sights and activities to offer that attract people from all over and for different reasons.
