HISTORY: “SEGOVIA CATHEDRAL”

Catedral de Segovia

A while ago I talked about Segovia, well-known for its historic heritage which can be found in monuments such as: the Roman Aqueduct, the Fortress and the Cathedral. The latter is the focus of this article.

Segovia Cathedral or the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption and of San Frutos, began construction in 1525 and was completed in 1768.

The old Cathedral of Santa María was destroyed during the 1520 Revolt of the Comuneros as it was close to the Fortress. Its cloister and other elements were transported to the present cathedral.

This monument rises above other modern constructions in Segovia. You can see the cathedral, or parts of it, from almost any street in Segovia but it is not until you’re in the Plaza Mayor when you really realise the full beauty of this architectural piece of art.

Amongst its many features, it has a structure of three high naves and ambulatory, making it an impressive cathedral that is 33m high, 50m wide and 105m long.
