HISTORY: “MONASTERY OF SAINT TORIBIO OF LIÉBANA”

Deep in the countryside, at a few kilometres from Potes and in the foothills of the Picos de Europa, we can find a monastery rich in history: the “Monastery of Saint Toribio of Liébana”.

The ancient constructions of the monastery are pre-Romanesque in style, possibly Asturian or Mozarabic.

To be able to visit monuments that are surrounded by nature and to enter inside and listen to the silence is to travel back in time and imagine how the monks would have lived in the past.

It is certainly a privileged setting to be surrounded by mountains, trees, animals…a monastery which is in direct contact with nature makes it a perfect spot where to find peace and recollection.

Next to the monastery is a route that runs through holm-oak woods and it has a history of its own to tell…but this will be for a separate post.
