When the floodgates of the Riaño dam closed in 1987, the following villages were flooded: Salio, Escaro, Pedrosa del Rey, Huelde, Anciales, Riaño (a new Riaño was built) and La Puerta. The church from this last village was saved and it is the focus of this article.
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was transported, stone by stone, to the new Riaño. This building has an apse that dates from the 13th and 14th century and contains Gothic paintings inside which are particularly rare in Spain.
There are two constructions next to Our Lady of the Rosary of La Puerta. The first is an old construction of an Hórreo (a raised Asturian-style granary) and the second is a monument raised in memory of the villages that were flooded by the dam. This monument holds the church bells from every village that was flooded.
