HISTORY: “THE SANCTUARY OF COVADONGA”

The National Park of the Picos de Europa (European Peaks), declared the Biosphere Reserve in 2002 by UNESCO.
Thanks to nature’s work over the centuries, today we can enjoy what is now the National Park: totally grey peaks from the colour of the limestone rock, or the emblematic Naranjo de Bulnes; green ‘majadas’ (green pastures where shepherds and their flocks shelter during long months away from home, similar to the seter, bothy or hafod); endless chasms; and glacial gorges and lakes such as Río Cares and the Lakes of Covadonga. The latter owe their name to their closeness to the Sanctuary of Covadonga.
Within the National Park of the Picos de Europa, there is an intensely green valley imbued in history, where the Sanctuary of Covadonga lies.
It tells of the story that occurred in Covadonga where Don Pelayo (King Pelayo) and his men, sheltering in the hillsides, attacked the Moors and conquered them.
An important point of reference on these hillsides is the cave where Don Pelayo took refuge. Today, this cave is home to the shrine of Our Lady of Covadonga, affectionately called locally as La Santina.
In the Valley of Covadonga, found in the municipality of Cangas de Onís, Asturias, there are many more things to see and a lot of history to learn about. If you have the chance, we recommend you visit it.
