On the road of Pontón (N-625), in the municipality of Cangas de Onís (Asturias), lies the small village of Caño where you can enjoy unspoilt countryside.
The famous River Sella runs through this hamlet, which is found inland in eastern Asturias. I say famous because it is on this river where the well-known International Decent of the River Sella takes place and which runs from Arriondas to Ribadesella.
In Caño (or Cañu, as it is known in Asturian), there is a dam, a series of salmon ladders and some spectacular rapids which make this spot a perfect place to enjoy and relax in.
The River Sella is not just the location for the international descent; it is much more than that: it is one of the most important salmon rivers in Spain, where salmon gather to reproduce by spawning and produce new specimens. Once these young fish grow they emigrate to the ocean and after a time they return to the river where they were born, repeating the same ancestral cycle that has gone on for generations.
As I mentioned above, salmon reproduce in the river by spawning and this takes a lot of effort for them to ascend the river, which in this case is the River Sella. This is why Caño, apart from being a perfect place to listen to nature, is also where best to spot these majestic animals as they drive themselves upstream against the rapids.
Lastly, if you are going to visit this spot, do remember that swimming is not allowed as it is highly dangerous to do so.
