NATURE: THE MINE OF BUFERRERA.

Today I shall tell you about a mine that lays in the midst of the National Park of the Picos de Europa, found near the Lakes of Covadonga: The Mine of Buferrera.

The mine of Buferrera dates from 1868 and it was used for the extraction of minerals such as iron and manganese. The road that today leads to the Lakes of Covadonga did not exist in those days and miners had to carry the minerals down the mountainside on their shoulders or on beasts of burden, covering some 12km in distance and a drop of 800m between this mine and Covadonga.

Nowadays, the mine of Buferrera is a lovely walk through rocks, mine entrances, light trucks, tunnels…

When you walk along this short route, you have the feeling of being in an adventure film. There are spots which remind me of the Lord of the Rings – they are just missing the hobbits! Whether or not you have a lot of imagination, you will enjoy visiting this unusual spot.
