NATURE: “THE BROWN BEAR”

Oso Pardo

The brown bear used to exist practically in all the continents of Europe, Asia and a large part of west North America. Unfortunately, as the centuries past, the presence of the brown bear has reduced, although it continues to exist in a sufficiently extensive area today.

The brown bear lives in a variety of habitats, from semi-desert cold climates to coastal areas or even the Arctic tundra. But its habitat par excellence is the forest and it is one of the most common mammals to be found in Siberian or Scandinavian taiga conifer forests, or in mixed-type forests in eastern Europe and the Pyrenees, or in deciduous beech, oak and birch forests along the Cantabrian Chain. The few bear populations that exist in Western Europe are found in the highest mountain massifs where human presence is slight.

The large area where bears are scattered over and the environmental factors that they have adapted to has affected the biometric data of the species. For example, the Iberian brown bears are the smallest species, where a male might weigh 250kg in comparison with other brown bear males that can reach weights of 700kg.

As a consequence of this change in its external features, some specialists have defined a large number of subspecies.

Brown bears that are in most danger live in Spain, together with Italy and France. With regards to Spain, the bears are in danger of extinction. Their deaths have mainly been caused by Man, by the loss and division of their natural habitat and due to the low genetic diversity of the Cantabrian bears.

For those of you who love nature and who especially love bears: if you would like to see them in their natural habitat (although it is difficult to spot them), you might like to visit the Cantabrian Chain or the Pyrenees (France and Andorra).
