NATURE: THE SIERRA DEL SUEVE (THE SUEVE MOUNTAINS).

The Sierra del Sueve is found between the municipalities of: Piloña, Parres, Carávia y Colunga; which all belong to the Principality of Asturias.

The Sierra del Sueve is one of the limestone formations in Europe that is closest to the sea, and its highest summit is Pico Pienzu (1159m). Sailors tell that when they were some 10 miles from the coast they could see this sierra, which makes it an important landmark.

A rather peculiar characteristic of the Sueve is that is it lays SO – NE, in an oblique line with the Cantabrian Chain and the Coast. Because of this, the River Piloña runs parallel to the coast until it flows into the River Sella which, when it reaches Arriondas, makes a brusque turn to skirt round the Sueve and flow into Ribadesella.

The Sueve is an exceptional place where you can go on routes and enjoy everything this sierra has to offer: yews, beeches, hazelnuts, hawthorns, wild boars, bucks, roe deer…and of course…Asturcones (horses indigenous to Asturias), the lords of these lands.
