VILLAGES: “ARRIONDAS”

In East Asturias, we can find a well-known village: Arriondas, the capital of the municipality of Parres.

It is well-known all over the world because this capital hosts two international sporting events: the Descenso Internacional del Sella, (the International Descent of the River Sella), founded by Don Dionisio de la Huerta; and the Subida Internacional el Fito (International Ascent to El Fito).

It also has breathtaking scenery; Arriondas is set in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by mountains like the Sierra del Sueve or Pico Moro and it has fantastic views of the Picos de Europa.

One of aspect which I consider to be one of its most important is its position along the River Sella, a salmon river par excellence and its tributary River Piloña.

I mentioned above that the founder of the Descent of the River Sella was Don Dionisio de la Huerta, a man who was greatly loved by the locals from Arriondas. They raised a bust in his honour in the Plaza Venancio Pando, where you can also find the famous Arriondas Canon and the Parres Municipal Town Hall.

Lastly, many mountaineers and ramblers have their breakfast in this village to stock up on energy before they go on any one of the many routes you can do in Parres or in the Picos de Europa.
