VILLAGES: VILLARDECIERVOS.

Villardeciervos

Villardeciervos belongs to the municipality of Carballeda in Zamora, found in the base of the Sierra de la Culebra mountain range (National Game Reserve).

Villardeciervos is of great historic value and in fact, in 1987 it was declared a Collection of Historic-Artistic buildings. Its well-preserved buildings, numerous fountains, narrow lanes and the Roman way, A Bracara Asturicam, that joins Braga and Astorga (later named XVII Way of Antonio Pío’s route), makes us easily envisage how people would have lived there in the past.

No doubt you’re thinking: How can narrow lanes help us imagine how people lived there in the past? Well, quite a lot, actually, because these lanes were built as camouflage in the days when goods were smuggled over from near-by Portugal.

But Villardeciervos is not only about history, it also has its natural surroundings. As I mentioned at the beginning, Villardeciervos is found in the base of the Sierra de la Culebra mountain range, which is a National Game Reserve. Its location offers the possibility of hillwalking or sightings of the varied fauna that lives in the sierra: deer, roe deer, wild boar…and of course, the Iberian woolf, given that this sierra has one of the highest density populations of this species in Europe.

Lastly, we have to mention the Valparaíso reservoir river beach. It is a beautiful 2km beach with a picnic area, tables and shade under wonderful oak trees. As a final point, you can enjoy seeing beautiful sunsets from this beach…recommended for everyone!
