Ponferrada is a beautiful city which the River Sil runs through. Its many ruins hold great cultural importance, providing evidence of the different civilisations that lived there in the past.
One of these ruins is the Ponferrada Castle, declared a Historic Artistic Monument in 1924.

When the floodgates of the Riaño dam closed in 1987, the following villages were flooded: Salio, Escaro, Pedrosa del Rey, Huelde, Anciales, Riaño (a new Riaño was built) and La Puerta. The church from this last village was saved and it is the focus of this article.
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was transported, stone by stone, to the new Riaño. This building has an apse that dates from the 13th and 14th century and contains Gothic paintings inside which are particularly rare in Spain.
