HISTORY: THE ROYAL PALACE OF MADRID

Palacio real de Madrid

The Royal Palace of Madrid has its origins in the 9th century when the Muslim kingdom of Toledo built a fort which was later used by the kings of Castilla and on which the Fortress was built in the 16th century. It was destroyed in a fire in 1734 and Philip V of Spain wanted the new palace to be built on the same spot.

Today, the Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of His Majesty the King, although it is only used for State ceremonies. The present Royal family of Spain have lived in the Zarzuela Palace since 1962, Alphonse XIII being the last monarch to have lived there.

VILLAGES: “TUÑA”

General Riego

Tuña lies in the municipality of Tineo (Asturias) and set in the beautiful valley of the River Tuña. Because of its position it is surrounded by nature, particularly by dreamy forests. But the main feature of this village is its history.

Over the years, Tuña has seen the birth of many people, one of whom was the renowned General Riego who publically declared himself in favour of the Spanish Constitution of 1812.

This hamlet has a rich artistic heritage, due to the many ‘casas-palacio’ (noble villas) it has and which are still in good condition.

It is difficult to provide a short description of each building because they each have their own history and secrets to tell. From Turismo Natural, we suggest you visit Tuña and walk through its streets, talk with the locals and enjoy these ‘casas-palacios’.
