According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, we understand that tourism is all activity that we do as we travel to and stay at places that are not in our usual environment. These trips should be for consecutive periods, for less than one year and the reasons can be varied: from business to pleasure.
As tourism affects everything outside our usual environment and must be for less than a year, tourism can be classed into the following categories:
- Mass Tourism: traditional and passive tourism done in large groups of people.
- Individual Tourism: a more active tourism, where the person selects their own destination without a travel agent.
- Cultural Tourism: aimed at history and art enthusiasts.
- Rural Tourism: for those who love nature, whether on the coast or inland.
- Active Tourism: tourism that usually takes place in the country and is aimed at tourists that like to interact with nature.
- Business Tourism: an odd type of tourism, because we tend to think of business as being linked to work and not to tourism but this describes tourism that business people do when they have to travel on business.
There are many types of tourism that we can do, but sometimes our trips can be neutralised into one type of tourism: Individual Tourism. This is the type of tourism that lets us choose the activities we want to do and combine them if we want to, for example, Cultural Tourism with Rural Tourism.
To end this article, I would like to mention that the Spanish autonomous region that has the highest loyal following of tourists is the Principality of Asturias.
